In 2006 Wout Zweers enrolled Industrial Design Engineering at the Twente University in Enschede. After finishing the premaster he choose the master track design and styling. This study will be finished by the end of 2010.
He focused on design and styling. Recent projects were the design of an ergonomically improved welding torch, a new concept and working prototype for a computer casing, and a design for food packaging (create the future) which involved trend research, making scenario's and drawing a prototype.
designing a led - lamp
for !pet, a company in Hoogeveen, Wout designed a led light for his graduation. it is built and the report is also written, only the talk is still to be held.
the graduation involved more than only drawing and building the prototype. a comprehensive study was made of trends for future workspaces, proceeding where create the future stopped: not only a study but also making the prototype and finally the product itself. wout realised how important it is for him to combine sketching, drawing, constructing and testing. making the idea means a lot for him, it is the core of his work
amongst designing for home-working employees or ZZP'ers (free lancers) or designing a new type of sitting furniture for working at the monitor light appaered to be a very good topic. Led is very actual, bulbs will be banned soon, the energy costs are lower, they provide new opportunities for designing because of the smaller size and lower temperature. light also offers possibilities for creating a more expressive atmosphere than in common office spaces. examples were transferred from theater.
A special topic was the pattern that is used in the lamp. Wout Zweers spent much time to discover contemporary patterns and looked in natural shapes for inspiration. This is also a statement, the necessity of dealing well with natural envinronment, ecology and respecting and understanding nature are very important for him. This study resulted in making self-generating structures, not necessarily natural, but developed with the same background and principles that natural patterns are formed with.
A simple pattern. If necessary many different variants can be produced without much effort. The "rules" are similar to those in fish patterns (turing patterns).
Producing the patterns with present technology, especially sheet working with laser cutting and routing was investigated thoroughly and a CNC router was used, with open source programs, to realise the patterns

after 2010: making idea's
After his graduation he wants to proceed with designing for light, led, which will be the start of industrial designing, but also one-off and limited edition work will be made, as well as theater designs. the knowledge of production with cnc machines will be welcome, as well as the knowledge of thermal management of leds, led drivers, making light plans
Making idea's will be the leading principle, perhaps even more than before in theater and sculptural work. working with the material, looking well at opportunities of material and construction. but now with a good knowledge of the background and the ability to execute thorough and intelligent research.
making idea's: the idea must be executed in material, must be made. but also the idea itself: where there is no idea yet one has to be found: the task of the designer, but also very much Wout Zweers' personal way of working.
one of the most important things learned at the university is how to do this very structurized and with an open mind. his graduation report is a study how to deal with this as a designer, but also as an artist.
